Podcasting and Web 2 point OH

On Monday January 16th Wayne MacPhail came in and opened (some of) our eyes to “podcasting”. Now I have always heard about podcasting before just like I have heard of blogs but I was not really interested in it until now, I must say I am very interested in the concept of podcasting and blogging (poding? blogsting?). You see I got it into my cave man like head that podcasting was Apple and Apple and eye never got along. However, when Wayne showed us the facts I was simply blown away. The amount of MP3 related devices sold in the last 3 months is surprising to say the least. I think the figure was fourteen plus million MP3 devices around X-mass. That is a HUGE amount (Roughly 4.2 Billion dollars). I have a tiny (fits in the palm of my hand) MP3 player, I never use at all but I did use it a lot at Trent because I would have to walk, take the bus to various classes everyday, I would usually walk close to 3km a day just to get from class to class. It also is a recorder which is good for getting notes.

The one cooled thing I liked about Pod-casting is that it is more like a DVD then something totally new.

Podcasting and DVD and why they are similar

Both are replayble
Both have chapters
Both can skip chapters
Both have interactive stuff
Although DVD's do not need the internet most of the time the internet is needed when you want to see additional things that can only be seen online.

Wayne also touched upon something dubbed "Web 2.0” Its not the second internet like ww2.something.com (this is an example not a real link.. I think so anyways) but it’s the way the internet is maturing or morphing, people and programmers are finding better methods of doing things. For example one of the sites that was shown, Backpackit simply rocks socks. I use this every day now so that I do not have the nagging feeling in my brain of “I had to do something but I don’t know what … ah it nothing if it’s important I will remember it.”

Sites to check out for Podcasting
